ARE OUR COSTS TOO LOW?
Are our costs too low?
Website Designers have varying fees for a standard site ranging from £1000 to £5000+ for the build, and that may not be anything more than a home page, several others and a contact page. Mention that you want a shopping facility, and the cost may double up. Out comes the jargon and complex details about servers, data, storage, accounts, flux capacitors and Dilithium Crystals. It’s all done to confuse and justify the high cost.
Oh, and then there’s the hosting fees which could be standard with or without maintenance. I’ve seen some companies charge £60+ for a monthly maintenance fee, though that doesn’t mean they will do the task.
And then there are the sneaky costs that remove the site build, and instead offer an all-inclusive monthly charge of £60+ for the site build and the monthly maintained hosting.
Sneaky?
How so?
Surely, a £60 charge is great? Well, no.
Let’s compare the options against what we offer, and I’ll let you make your own mind up.
Option 1 is that you pay £1000 for the site plus £60 per month for a maintained site (offering to work on changes you make). After 3 years, you’ll have paid £3,160
Option 2 is that you pay £0 for the site plus £60 per month for a maintained site (offering to work on changes you make). After 3 years, you’ll have paid £2,160
We offer based on a standard site build cost of £240 differing hosting packages;
- Just Hosting – where we host but you’re in charge of your maintenance = £6 per month. After 3 years, you’ll have paid £456
- Basic Hosting – where we maintain the site with limited updates = £22 per month. After 3 years, you’ll have paid £1,032
- Plus Hosting – where we maintain the site with increased updates = £32 per month. After 3 years, you have paid £1,362
Just because a company offers you unlimited updates and changes to your site as part of a maintained package, don’t get sucked into believing that, as their ability to deliver that will depend on their schedule, their workload, their capacity, and if it falls within the permitted changes. Plus, sometimes you may not even request a change for several months but you’re still paying a premium.
We allow our customers to flex up or down the hosting packages based on their needs because we respect that their needs change.
And most of all – like most of all – the customer can pay monthly rather than an annual upfront cost. We don’t want you to be out of pocket on Day 1.
So we’ve covered the packaging and I’m sure you noticed me sneaking in the site build cost of £240. Criticism has come our way in waves that we’re undercutting the market, though we class that as a reasonable charge for a standard site. Of course, we increase by 50 to 75% when required to add in shopping or booking or other facilities, but we make that clear all the way.
Our business model is not based on a ‘take the money and stop caring’ approach.
Instead, we live on the ‘work with you for the future’ because if we’re still connected going forwards, then we both become stronger.
